ISSUE 00: THE FIRST EXPERIMENT

01 — THE FIRST WATCH SETS THE TONE.

What draws us to a watch often begins with an unusual detail. With MATRIX SIGNAL, it is the numbers moving behind the hands, giving it the feel of a small instrument from another time. They recall the interfaces and technologies that cinema at the turn of the millennium invited us to imagine.

This connection between an accessory and an object from fiction shapes LAYDOWN’s perspective. We chose to begin with MATRIX SIGNAL to bring something of that imagined world into a watch we can wear every day.

02 — A FAMILIAR OBJECT, AN UNEXPECTED PRESENCE.

A watch holds a particular place among the things we wear. It complements an outfit, expresses a preference and catches our eye several times a day.

MATRIX SIGNAL adds a detail that changes this familiar presence: an animated numerical display behind the hands. This combination captures what interests LAYDOWN. A familiar object can still surprise us through a detail, a colour or a way of representing time.

It gives the brand a concrete starting point: selecting watches that encourage us to look at everyday objects with a little more curiosity.

03 — WHY MATRIX SIGNAL?

MATRIX nods to The Matrix, its columns of code and the worlds that cinema of the era invited us to imagine beyond the screen. This reference places the watch within a visual culture that runs through LAYDOWN.

SIGNAL gives it a place in the brand’s story. It evokes a transmission received from a future imagined at the turn of the millennium.

The name becomes an editorial choice: it conveys how LAYDOWN sees this watch and the associations we want to build around it.

04 — BEGINNING WITH ONE MODEL.

The original project brought together several watch families. The launch ultimately centres on MATRIX SIGNAL.

This choice gives the first chapter a clear focus. One silhouette, one dial, five colours: enough variation to explore different expressions, with a shared identity that is immediately recognisable.

Attention can then turn to how the watch is presented, how its movements are shown and how a coherent visual world develops around it. For a brand just beginning, this focus gives the first encounter a clearer identity.

05 — FIVE COLOURS, AN OPEN CHOICE.

Acid, Carbon, Frost, Opal and Ruby allow this first model to appeal to different tastes. The choice might begin with a colour you already wear, a contrast you are looking for or a shade you had never considered before.

Their names also contribute to MATRIX SIGNAL’s identity. They give each version a place within the same world, while allowing it to be recognised and chosen in its own right.

This variety matters from the outset: LAYDOWN offers a shared perspective that everyone can connect with their own style.

06 — WHAT ISSUE 00 BEGINS.

Issue 00 records this first choice: to begin with a watch expressive enough to give direction to everything around it.

The selection, the name, the photographs and the words come together as LAYDOWN’s first introduction. MATRIX SIGNAL reveals how the brand connects an object with cultural references, then builds a world that people can make their own.

MATRIX SIGNAL is the starting point.

This first chapter leaves a question for what follows: what other objects might awaken that same curiosity?
